New book announcement

Tsitsikamma 8

“Thick with trees, bushes and ferns, the forest was a shady tousle of vegetation, impenetrable beyond the path. Several giant trees lay dead and decaying where they’d fallen years previously, creating fertile surfaces for other life. A caravan of ants, each insect hauling a tiny piece of plant, trickled past her boots and disappeared, one-by-one, beneath a chunk of bark.” – from Penny Haw’s new novel to be published in July 2021.

January 2021. When a flood separates Faye and her friends’ anorexic daughter, Clare from the group on a multi-day hike in the Tsitsikamma Mountains in South Africa, the women not only battle injury and the elements, but also face what isolation reveals about themselves. In saving Clare, Faye realises that she is not the diminished woman her husband would have her believe her to be. As Clare opens up about her condition, the women recognise that their individual shame stands in the way of their happiness.

About gaslighting, eating disorders and obsession and the shame associated with all of the aforementioned, and also family, friendship, survival and the healing power of being alone in nature, Penny Haw’s new novel is scheduled for publication by Köehler Books (US) in July 2021.
